How much mobile data do you actually need?

Unlimited data sounds great until you realise you use 6GB a month. Here's how to check your real usage and stop paying for data you never touch.

Last updated: October 2026

Check your real usage first

  • Look at the last 3 months in your network's app — one quiet month doesn't tell the story.
  • Note your highest month, not the average: you want a plan that covers your peaks.
  • Check how much of that was on Wi-Fi already — your phone splits mobile vs Wi-Fi data.
  • If you've never hit your cap, you're almost certainly overpaying for allowance.

Rough guide to allowances

  • Light use (messaging, maps, some browsing): 3–8GB is usually enough.
  • Medium use (social media, music streaming, some video): 10–25GB covers most people.
  • Heavy use (daily video, tethering, no home Wi-Fi): 50GB+ or unlimited starts to make sense.
  • Remember: dropping from unlimited to 25GB can halve your monthly bill.

Match the plan to the usage

Once you know your number, the saving is straightforward: buy the smallest plan that covers your peak month. And when your contract ends, don't let it roll over at the old price — add it to UK Bill Tracker (free) and get reminded in time to switch to a cheaper deal.
